On October 7, 2016, I met with Hilary Jones-Danziger to look at the space and determine what would look ascetically pleasing in the space as well as how to play around with the circular center without making the space cluttered. I learned to keep things like balance in my mind while designing and thinking of items to put in the space. We also talked about what furniture could be put in the space and where to put it. We determined that the center should be kept clear otherwise it would look cluttered. I kept all of these design tips in mind when I made the final design for the space.
She also gave me some catalogues of commercial brand furniture to give me some ideas of what furniture to put in the space as well as ways I can play around with the furniture and how to make the space look appealing. These catalogues also gave me some estimates for high quality furniture that can last a long time. Look for a post in the future to see the final sketch of the space! Last Wednesday, September 28, Shelly Friel (Development), Kathy Durivage (Development), Pete McCorckle (Grounds), Katie Archambault (on-campus mentor), the project's generous donor and I met to go over the potentials in the Signature Space.
There a donor who is planning on investing a generous donation towards the space in order to further my vision for it to be an outdoor student space. Together we went over the uses of the space and what the overall goal of the space is planned to be. We both want it it to be a functional space in which the students utilize to the fullest extent. More specifically, I want students to use this space not only as an alternate study but also a space in which they can calm themselves and reduce stress. Two ideas that I have put together is that Emma Willard is a demanding school and through research I have determined that being outside in nature reduces stress. We deduced that creating this space with benefit to great degree and it is extremely versatile. As the conversation continued, I mentioned some aspects from my wish list (look at 1/9/16 post) in order to grasp what could and could not be done in the space. Hopefully, we can come to see some of those big ticket items soon!. The donor and I spoke of some other possibilities for the space such as themed corners as well as portable chairs that can be checked in and out of the space through the library. The meeting went extremely well! I was a little bit nervous being the only student amongst five adults, but the meeting was productive and once I talked more in depth about my inspiration and hopes for the space I felt more comfortable.
